HMG (Menotropin)
Also called Human Menopausal Gonadotropin · Menotropin · Menopur
HMG is a fertility medicine that supplies FSH and LH activity. Men comparing it with hCG are usually asking about sperm production: HMG adds FSH support, while hCG provides an LH-like signal, so they are not simply interchangeable versions of the same drug.
Dosage & duration
UK Menopur male-fertility label; not a universal TRT or post-cycle regimen.
Menopur for selected male infertility
Product label- Dose
- 75 or 150 IU FSH activity with corresponding LH activity
- How often
- Two or three times weekly, under the skin or into muscle
- How long
- At least three or four months
Used in a specialist hCG-linked treatment plan; this is not a dose conversion between HMG and hCG.

IU describes biological activity. Do not add FSH and LH activities together and call that a doubled Menopur dose.
The practical difference
HMG or hCG for fertility?
| What differs | HMG | hCG |
|---|---|---|
| Hormone activity | FSH and LH activity | An LH-like signal |
| Male-fertility context | Adds FSH support in selected treatment plans | Used before adding HMG in the cited UK label |
Why it comes up in TRT and fertility discussions
A normal testosterone result does not prove normal sperm production. HMG is used in selected fertility problems, often alongside an hCG plan; the cause of infertility determines whether this approach makes sense.
HMG and hCG do different jobs
Menotropins provide FSH and LH activity. In the UK male-fertility label, hCG stimulation comes before adding menotropins. The treatment is intended to support sperm production, not to function as a muscle-building add-on or a universal post-cycle reset.
Why the timeline is measured in months
The label’s male course lasts at least three or four months, with specialist assessment. Feeling better, larger testes or a testosterone rise cannot substitute for semen testing. Female ovarian-stimulation regimens use different schedules and monitoring.
Model details: HMG (Menotropin) · relative timing
Compare timing and buildup for this compound. The values are not blood concentrations or a measure of strength.
Shows a relative timing scenario; absolute blood concentrations are not calibrated.
Timing assumptions and sources
Proposed 12 h is the midpoint of the Menopur 11–13 h FSH half-life range during multiple dosing. Single-dose Tmax 17.9 h belongs to a different phase and must not be combined blindly.
One 1 legacy units input peaks at 1 relative unit after a single dose. Other amounts scale proportionally; overlapping doses add when accumulation is on. Different compounds use separate relative scales.
- Timing half-life used
- 12 hours
- Absorption half-life assumed
- 3 hours
- Reference amount for the relative scale
- 1 legacy units
- Saved numerical amounts retain their original values. No conversion to milligrams or IU is established.
- Absorption half-life is assumed to be one quarter of the slower timescale (3 h); it is not a measured absorption parameter.
- A single 1-unit input has a peak of 1 relative unit; scaling and repeated-dose addition are mathematical assumptions. This normalization is independent of the example dose.
- FSH is not total menotropin, LH or hCG.
- No IU-to-mass conversion is adopted; saved amounts must not be reinterpreted.
- The proposed timing concerns the FSH component and multiple-dose study, not universal menotropin kinetics.
- A future FSH model is feasible after dose-unit mapping, baseline handling and matched model-shape verification.
Saved amounts retain their original numeric encoding. A supported conversion to milligrams or IU has not been established; these are legacy units for a relative timing scenario.
- MENOPUR label 11 and 12.3
Study 2000-03 included 33 pituitary-suppressed premenopausal women. A single 225 IU SC dose gave FSH Cmax 8.5 mIU/mL, Tmax 17.9 h and AUC120 726.2 h·mIU/mL. The repeated regimen gave Cmax 15 mIU/mL, Tmax 8 h and FSH half-life 11–13 h.

Common questions
Is HMG just another name for hCG?
No. HMG supplies FSH as well as LH activity and has a different role in fertility care.
Does a good testosterone level mean fertility is restored?
No. Sperm production needs appropriate assessment, usually including semen analysis.
