Belly-fat goals

Tesamorelin's established use is reducing deep abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. That is different from general weight loss or losing the fat you can pinch.

The headline trial result measured fat around organs on scans. It was not the same percentage of body weight lost — and it does not promise a flatter stomach for everyone.

The distinction that matters

Same abdomen. Different fat.

Under the skin Subcutaneous fat includes the fat you can pinch.

Dose, frequency and duration: check the formulation

1.28 mg daily

EGRIFTA WR

Under the skin. One prepared vial supplies seven daily doses, not one weekly injection.

1.4 mg daily

EGRIFTA SV

Under the skin. Different formulation, preparation and storage instructions.

2 mg daily

Original trial formulation

Historical study amount. Main results were assessed at 26 weeks.

Sources: WR label, SV label. These amounts are formulation-specific, not interchangeable instructions for a research vial.

How long? Treatment is reassessed by the prescriber for benefit and risk; 26 weeks is a trial assessment point, not a universal cycle.

The storage guide compares WR and SV directly. It explains why “keep all mixed peptides refrigerated” is wrong for these products.

What is EGRIFTA?

Tesamorelin stimulates the pituitary GH axis. EGRIFTA is the prescription product family; WR and SV are different formulations with different preparation instructions. The molecule’s name alone does not identify a product’s dose, measuring volume or storage conditions.

How does it affect abdominal fat?

GHRH-receptor stimulation increases GH and downstream IGF-1. This provides a mechanism for studying changes in body fat, but also explains why glucose and IGF-1 monitoring matter. A short peptide half-life is not a way to avoid downstream hormonal effects.

What changed after six months?

The pivotal result concerned visceral fat

26-week trial TesamorelinPlacebo
Visceral abdominal fat Decreased 15.2% Increased 5.0%
Population Adults with HIV and excess abdominal fat Same study eligibility
What the result is not A 15.2% reduction in total body weight A comparison with a GLP-1 weight-loss drug
Falutz et al., 2007: 412 participants; historical study formulation at 2 mg/day. The trial dose is not a preparation instruction for current WR or SV products.

The trial’s abdominal-fat measure came from imaging. It should not be relabeled as overall fat loss or transferred directly to a person without HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Original trial

A separate small randomized study in people with obesity and reduced GH secretion also investigated visceral fat. That selected population does not establish a general obesity indication or a universal “belly fat” treatment. Makimura et al.

Does a short half-life mean it wears off quickly?

Tesamorelin exposure, the resulting GH pulse and the longer IGF-1 response are different measurements. Reading the peptide’s decline as the duration of its clinical effect is misleading. Check the compound model notes for formulation and study scope before comparing curves.

Side effects and monitoring

The EGRIFTA WR label addresses elevated IGF-1, fluid retention, glucose intolerance/diabetes, injection-site and hypersensitivity reactions. It contraindicates use in active malignancy, pregnancy and certain disruptions of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. A prescriber should assess whether the treatment fits the person’s diagnosis and monitor its actual response. WR prescribing information

What about ordinary belly fat or bodybuilding?

A mechanism and selected research findings explain interest outside HIV care. They do not validate a general fat-loss cycle, use in healthy athletes or combinations with other GH-axis products. Do not infer treatment success from a higher IGF-1 or a smoother peptide curve alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does tesamorelin cause weight loss? The approved use and pivotal result concern excess visceral abdominal fat in HIV lipodystrophy. It is not a general weight-loss medicine.

How does tesamorelin compare with GLP-1 medicines? Tesamorelin stimulates the GH axis and has a specific visceral-fat indication in HIV lipodystrophy. A GLP-1 medicine such as semaglutide acts through a different receptor and has its own labeled uses and outcome trials. The tesamorelin visceral-fat percentage is not directly comparable with a GLP-1 trial’s percentage of total body weight lost.

Is visceral fat the fat just under the skin? No. Visceral fat is inside the abdomen around organs; subcutaneous fat is beneath the skin. A change in one does not guarantee the same change in the other.

Is EGRIFTA WR injected once weekly? No. A seven-day prepared-vial use period should not be confused with dose frequency; follow its prescription and current instructions.

Can I use the trial’s 2 mg for a different product? Formulations are not interchangeable by copying a number. Have the pharmacy confirm the exact product, prescribed amount and volume.
