MK-677: Muscle Goals, Appetite and Study Doses
Muscle goals, appetite and the scale
MK-677 attracts people seeking muscle gain, recovery, better sleep or a bigger appetite—with the convenience of a pill. More weight or lean mass does not automatically mean more strength.
In an older-adult trial, fat-free mass increased without better strength or function. Appetite, fluid retention and blood-sugar changes are practical trade-offs.
More lean mass ≠ more strength
Average fat-free mass change at 12 months
No demonstrated gain in strength or function.
Dose, frequency and duration studied
| Question | Published older-adult trial |
|---|---|
| Amount | 25 mg by mouth |
| How often | Once daily |
| How long | Main comparison at 12 months, within a two-year study |
Participants were aged 60–81. This was monitored research, not a bodybuilding cycle. It does not establish the best time of day, a safe long-term performance dose or an on/off schedule. Trial.
Is MK-677 a SARM or a peptide?
Neither. Ibutamoren is a nonpeptide growth hormone secretagogue: it stimulates release of the body’s GH rather than supplying GH directly. Oral activity is a property of this molecule, not proof that it is safer than an injection. “Nutrobal” is a market name often used for ibutamoren, not a separate validated formulation.
Why does it make people hungry?
Ghrelin-receptor activity can affect appetite as well as GH release. GH in turn influences IGF-1 and glucose metabolism. This helps explain why a rise in IGF-1 may occur alongside hunger, fluid retention and reduced insulin sensitivity.
Does it build useful muscle?
+2.7 kg
Average scale weight
MK-677 at 12 months, versus +0.8 kg on placebo.
+5 mg/dL
Average fasting glucose
Increase with MK-677; insulin sensitivity also declined.
No gain
Strength and function
The study did not demonstrate improvement in these outcomes.
In that randomized study, fat-free mass included water and other non-fat tissues; it was not a direct measure of new contractile muscle. Original trial
A separate trial in people recovering from hip fracture was stopped early after a congestive-heart-failure safety signal. Most functional measures did not improve. That population differs from healthy users, but the finding rules out describing the overall safety record as merely appetite and mild water retention. Hip-fracture trial
Does once daily mean a 24-hour half-life?
A drug’s plasma elimination and its effect on GH or IGF-1 are different time courses. Once-daily administration in a trial does not establish a 24-hour plasma half-life. A 5-hour half-life and 60% oral bioavailability are not substantiated by the clinical-outcome papers cited here and should not be used to infer a personal schedule.
Side effects
The studies identify increased appetite, edema, glucose changes and reduced insulin sensitivity as relevant concerns. New shortness of breath, chest symptoms or rapidly worsening swelling calls for medical assessment rather than assuming normal “GH water.” FDA specifically highlights the heart-failure signal in its ibutamoren safety information.
How does it compare with injectable peptides?
Compared with injected GH secretagogues, the clearest distinction is oral administration and a larger human research record. Neither feature proves a favorable benefit-risk balance for bodybuilding. A useful comparison asks about the actual outcome—strength, fracture recovery or symptoms—not just how high IGF-1 rises.
Frequently asked questions
Does MK-677 need to be injected?
No. It is orally active and is not a peptide.
Will MK-677 show up on a drug test?
WADA prohibits ibutamoren among GH secretagogues. A PK half-life is not a reliable detection window.
Does MK-677 cause insulin resistance?
Reduced insulin sensitivity and increased fasting glucose were observed in the randomized older-adult study.
Can MK-677 be stacked with CJC-1295?
The trials above do not establish the effectiveness or safety of that combination. A second GH-axis stimulus is not an evidence-based way to eliminate metabolic risk.
Is MK-677 the same as nutrobal?
That name is commonly used for ibutamoren. A trade-style name does not establish a product’s contents or approval.
