VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide)
Also called VIP
People often find VIP while researching persistent symptoms attributed to mold exposure or CIRS, and ask whether a nasal spray could improve how they feel and function. VIP has also been studied in lung disease. These are different uses and formulations: a promising small nasal-spray report is not proof that every VIP product works the same way.
Dosage & duration
Original 2013 nasal-spray study · selected CIRS-WDB patients
Initial study schedule
Published example · product-specific- Dose
- 50 mcg per administration
- How often
- 4 nasal administrations daily initially
- How long
- At least 18 months of treatment follow-up, with dose adjustments
Open-label study of 20 patients, not a fixed universal course. The initial total was 200 mcg/day; it is not 50 mcg in each nostril four times daily.

The practical difference
Can nasal VIP help persistent symptoms?
People seek relief from symptoms attributed to mold exposure or CIRS. The nasal-spray report and hospital research answer different questions.
| Research context | Nasal VIP report | Hospital IV trial |
|---|---|---|
| People studied | Selected patients with CIRS | Critically ill patients |
| Finding | Symptoms improved in a small report | No improvement in the main outcome |
| Key limit | No placebo comparison | Does not establish nasal-spray benefit |
Why do people seek VIP?
The common question is whether nasal VIP can help persistent symptoms and day-to-day function in a CIRS protocol. The original report described improvement, but had no placebo group and included selected patients already treated within that protocol. It cannot establish how well VIP works for anyone with fatigue, brain fog or a history of mold exposure.
What does the spray amount mean?
The study began with 50 mcg four times a day, then adjusted treatment. This means 200 mcg total initially, not doubling that amount by interpreting it as per nostril. Different spray preparations deliver different amounts, so counting sprays without the label can mislead.
Do lung trials support the same use?
No direct transfer is justified. Inhaled lung research and the large IV aviptadil critical-illness trial involve different routes, patients and outcomes. The IV trial’s primary result was negative; neither it nor an erectile-dysfunction combination establishes a nasal wellness regimen.
What is worth clarifying before comparing protocols?
Clarify the diagnosis, exact formulation, goal and plan for judging change. A small uncontrolled report cannot supply a guaranteed recovery timeline. Breathing difficulty or worsening systemic symptoms deserves assessment rather than escalating a spray based on a graph.
Model details: VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) · relative timing
Compare timing and buildup for this compound. The values are not blood concentrations or a measure of strength.
Shows a relative timing scenario; absolute blood concentrations are not calibrated.
Timing assumptions and sources
Domschke 1978: four healthy volunteers,30 min graded IV infusions; approximately 1 min plasma disappearance after stopping infusion. This can inform a fast IV relative scenario, not a validated intranasal profile.
One 1 mg input peaks at 1 relative unit after a single dose. Other amounts scale proportionally; overlapping doses add when accumulation is on. Different compounds use separate relative scales.
- Timing half-life used
- 0.01666667 hours
- Absorption half-life assumed
- 0.004166667 hours
- Reference amount for the relative scale
- 1 mg
- Absorption half-life is assumed to be one quarter of the slower timescale (0.004166666666666667 h); it is not a measured absorption parameter.
- A single 1-unit input has a peak of 1 relative unit; scaling and repeated-dose addition are mathematical assumptions. This normalization is independent of the example dose.
- Inhaled, intranasal, intracavernosal and IV aviptadil are not interchangeable.
- A terminal 21 minute phase in other IV studies differs from the initial 1–2 minute disappearance phase.
- Inhaled vasoactive intestinal peptide exerts immunoregulatory effects in sarcoidosis.

- Domschke et al.1978: Vasoactive intestinal peptide in man
Four healthy volunteers received 30-minute IV infusions. After infusion stopped, the mean plasma disappearance half-time was about one minute. This does not establish nasal/SC kinetics.

Common questions
Is 50 mcg the amount per nostril?
The quoted study used 50 mcg per administration four times daily initially. Do not double it from an assumption about nostrils; the actual spray label defines what one actuation delivers.
Is VIP a short peptide cycle?
The nasal report followed prolonged treatment with adjustments, not a standard four-week cycle. It does not establish a best duration for other uses.
